The melting point of nickel is about twice that of copper, which provides effective high-temperature protection for the plated conductor.
The copper conductor is only slightly more resistive after nickel plating, but is very soft and resistant to fatigue.
At 250℃, the use of a nickel-plated copper conductor is important, and a nickel coating of 2% wt is usually sufficient.
When the temperature is 450℃ or above, the nickel coating thickness should be increased.
In the United States, the nickel-coated conductor of such 450℃ hot wire and cable is usually 27 percent by weight.
Pure nickel conductors should be used when temperatures exceed 600℃, especially when high and low temperatures are constantly alternating.
